Hurley played his college basketball at Seton Hall, where he was a point guard for three seasons under coach P.J. He and his teammates made it as far as the Sweet 16 in his freshman year, where they were defeated by none other than Bobby Hurley and Duke in 1992.

After leaving Seton Hall, Hurley went on to play two more years with the Pirates as their starting point guard. During this time, he was part of some successful teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament. Although his college career wasn't as highly publicized as his brother's Bobby Hurley, who won two titles at Duke, Dan Hurley was still a solid player in his own right.
